Probably your best chance to make immediate improvements to your energy efficiency is to address your HVAC, ventilation, waste and disposal and water systems.

It is sometimes too expensive to change out major components of your building systems, even with the incentives provided by current regulations and rulings. If the Return on Investment calculations show that changes in present equipment will satisfy you, that can be accomplished both within the system itself, and by the use of timers, setbacks, sensors, and ductwork zones. Modern HVAC equipment can carry warm or cold air from one side of a building to the other as the sun shifts, eliminating the use of compressors for large portions of the day.

High efficiency HVAC units are becoming much less expensive than they were just 2 years ago, and their ROI can be 4, 5, or 6 times over their expected life. The energy savings can be immense from the money that they are installed. Many older systems draw unconditioned outside air into the building for ventilation without filtering it or pre-conditioning it, wasting energy in amazing amounts.
